I stayed here instead of a hotel to prepare for a wedding. It was great! Both cottages were spotless, and there were little touches that made me feel welcome. I had to prepare a meal for a large number of people, as well as get dressed in a gown, and the large, clean areas and fully equipped kitchen made it easy. Maintenance even stopped by because a light bulb was out, and they were there within 15 minutes!
There were plenty of pillows, and the bed was really comfortable. The train did come by, but I honestly didn't notice it after the first time. The staff was really friendly, and helped with whatever I needed. The owner even let me borrow his crock pot, because I forgot mine at home!
I would definitely stay here any time I'm in Williamsburg again. It's like staying at a hotel room with a kitchenette, but with much more room, and more privacy.

Hi Jump brothers, Bernice, and staff:
Thank you for my third year of great RV'ing Anvil Campground. Both when I visited solo and when I visited with my brothers, it's always a pleasure to be your guest.
As you know, as a recreational runner I love the convienence of your location. As a frequently Amtrak passenger I love the ease of seamless transportation between your park and the Williamsburg Amtrak station.
Lastly, the kindness and personal touch that you extend to me makes Anvil Campground "feel like home". I'm looking forward to seeing you again next year.
Many thanks and kindest regards,

October 11, 2011 - www.tripadvisor.com - “Great Campground!”
-4 out of 5 stars
We recently stayed at Anvil for a week on a family vacation. The campground is very nice. The sites are small and more suited to large travel trailers or big rigs that don't need much space beyond the camper. The staff was excellent and very helpful. Nice, well stocked store and clean bathrooms with nice showers. Location is great! We were just a few miles from Colonial Williamsburg. Campground offers a nice shuttle service to the Visitor Center although we didn't use it because we had a pet with us. The train could be an issue if loud noises bother you. The train ran right behind our site and was quite loud with a lot of vibration. It only bothered us the first night but then we got used to it and since we love trains it was kind of neat. Would recommend taking a more premium site if you don't want to be right up against the train tracks. Lots of things to do in the area and multiple good restaurants. Super Walmart & Lowe's & Home Depot close by. Thanks for a great week, Anvil. We'll be back next time we're in the area!

July 7, 2011 - www.tripadvisor.com - “Great Camp!”
-4 out of 5 stars
I found this camp on the Internet and decided to give it a try since it was very close to Busch Gardens, Water Country and Colonial Williamsburg. We rented the Journeyman Cottage and it was great! It comfortably slept 6 people and the only thing we had to provide was linens for the futon couch and the extra cots. The campground itself and its facilities are very well maintained and the staff is very friendly and helpful. There are plenty of restaurants, gas stations and a super Walmart in the immediate area. One thing you should be aware of is that a railroad track does run behind the campground. There is a tree line that separates the camp from the tracks so there is not a safety issue but it is a working track and trains do run at all hours. This may be a show stopper for some, especially for a light sleeper but for me it brought back memories of my childhood and the trains that ran behind our house. We will definitely be returning to Anvil Campground!

Just 10 minutes from Busch Gardens, Water County and Colonial Williamsburg! The staff is very helpful and knowledgeable of the area and attractions. They were very accommodating of our adding an extra night and our late check-in - they even called to remind us. Water, electric, cable and wi-fi were included. The trains are pretty loud but this did not bother us as we had the AC on in our pop-up. We would definitely stay there again.

What a great campground. So close to Busch Gardens and any restaurant you would ever want. The campground, bath houses, pool and everything in between is spotless. Think they scrubbed the road before we arrived. The owners could not have been any nicer. Even when we parked on the wrong site, they simply changed their system instead of having us move our camper. Thank you! We stayed in a standard site and it fit our 34' camper just fine. Next time I will reserve a Preferred site, only because we want to return and do more things in the area and make it a longer stay.
There is a train track that runs along the rear of the campground. Thick tree line and fence is there so no safety issue. However, if you have light sleeper you may want to park a row over. The trains were just a couple during the night and wasn't an issue for us.
This was actually my 2nd stay at this campground. The last time was about 30 years ago with my parents and after arriving at Anvil we noticed our hot water tank in the camper had a leak. This was our first stop on a 10 week vacation. My dad asked the owner where he could get it fixed and the owner (same family/owner as now) took our tank and said to go enjoy the parks and he would take care of it. We return that evening to our camper and the hot water tank was fixed and installed back into the camper. Payment for services?? Asked only that we return. Sorry it took me 30 years.
Thanks again for a great stay. !!

"LOVE this place!! Family owned, friendly folks. All sites shaded, very well kept. Pool, lots of play areas for kids. Bus service to all attractions and all of Williamsburg stops here. $1.50 gets you an all day bus pass and kids ride free.
Next to a train track. If that bothers you, it may be an issue. But, I love the clackity clack sound of a train and found it peacefully soothing. I also loved the nesting Robins and bay birds in the trees and on the playground equipment. Site #77 is next to a play area and it's like having a huge site with a private play area.
One of the best campgrounds I have stayed in!!"

My fiance and I stayed here back in June in the Journeyman Cottage. For the price we were paying I figured it would be no different then a hotel room. Boy was I wrong! The cottage was like a house having everything we needed. We only had to bring the cloths on our back and food. Everything else was supplied.
The office and maintenance staff is so friendly and very well informed on what to do in the Williamsburg area. When we checked-in, the staff went out of their way to explain what attractions to see and how much time we would need to see it all.
Next time we come to Williamsburg we are definitely staying at Anvil Campground! I would suggest everyone else to do the same.

We stayed at Anvil over New Year’s weekend and it was fantastic!! Do not believe the negatives...go see for yourself!! Yes, there is a train. Yes, there is a road nearby. It all adds to the ambience of camping. The sites were clean, level and easy to get into. The staff was very accommodating. We have stayed there previously and are planning another stay in April 11 with 6 other families. The campground is very convenient to shopping, dining, colonial Williamsburg and any other attraction there is in the area. The owners didn't deliberately build a campground between a railroad track and roadway....it was inherited and passed down from generation to generation. Support small family owned business and give Anvil a try...you'll be glad you did.

It is super clean. It is a bit tight however, we did not feel this was a problem. You are in a resort area and there were still lots of trees and shade. This is an interesting little park sandwiched between the road and the railroad track. We did not find the train traffic bothersome but some might. It was a clean and tidy park and the staff were friendly and helpful. We actually used the swimming pool because it was so hot during our stay. The pool area was clean and well kept. The park is located conveniently close by old town Williamsburg. We had no problem negotiating either the pull through site or the local area. We camped here in a Fifth Wheel.

Clean park, restrooms, and pool, a well tended park. Has full hookups including cable TV. Really glad for the Williamsburg bus stop right at the campground, we were able to go to Colonial Wmsburg, Water Country, Busch Gardens w/o driving. Yes there is a train track, but hey it's an urban area! Our spot was on the highway side, most sites are shady, some are not. We enjoyed our stay. We camped here in a Motorhome.

The campground was great. We stayed in one of the cottages. They were set up very nice and was very clean. We were only minutes away from everything. The people that worked there were great. They gave us suggestions for dinner our first night and were quick to get us checked in and when we checked out. We plan on returning and staying longer. We wouldn't’ consider staying any other place. Thanks for everything!

The staff was friendly and helpful in every way possible getting us set up. The park was clean, the bathrooms were clean, all hook ups worked good. It is one of only two campgrounds that have the city buses stop at, and it only cost $1.50 to ride it all day. Yes it does have trains but they don't run as often as other people say they do. You have to watch your little ones from wondering off, but that is what you are suppose to do, it's a law. Other than some noise from the trains, it's pretty quiet.

Loved our stay.....: Went to anvil on August 24th and 25th 2009. Campground was very clean. Management was super nice and always helpful. Bathrooms very clean, good hot showers. Pool was always clean and also fenced. Playground for kids very nice with fence also. Store was well stocked with almost everything a camper needs. Local police rode through campground on regular basis. Good lighting at night. Now for the train. The train track is about 20 feet behind the tent camping. Trains come through day and night. There were 6 of us camping and 3 were little kids. nobody ever woke up with fan going. and yes tent camping had electric and water hookups. Some people said no fence between you and train on reviews. There is no fence but there is a line of trees, thick weeds, briars and poison ivy.(Had no desire to walk that way and neither did kids) Had small children with us and never had problem at all. Most of the trains went buy so fast you barely noticed but a few were longer (like 30 seconds). Nothing to worry about if your wanting camping with good rates clean facilities and good management. Local attractions and food very close. We will use again when we go back for sure.

This was my first time coming to Williamsburg, Virginia. There were many things that made this campground nice. For starters I would like to tell you about the experience I had with one of the office clerks. Her name is Leann. She was working by herself in the office and very busy at the moment. That did not stop her from providing everyone with excellent customer service. She had 3 people there to check in and she took quality time with everyone to make sure that they were happy and explained everything to them. She was really helpful and very friendly. Second many people complain about the train. My husband and I didn't have any problems with it. This campground is very clean and the maintenance men are always working if anyone needs help. The last thing that I would like to mention is that this campground offers discounted tickets to Bush Gardens, Water Country, Williamsburg, Jamestown, and one other place. It was a great experience and if I ever come back to Williamsburg again I would definitely stay there. I would highly recommend this place. Keep up the good work! We camped here in a Motorhome.

"Dear Manager of Anvil Campground,
We would like to thank you, and your staff for being so nice. Our stay was very pleasant.
Mr. Tom Pickral, one of the grounds men was so pleasant, and he seem to love animals, which meant a lot to us because we have a little dog. We have been to Florida, North Carolina, and Tennessee, and our little dog has never really relaxed in a camp ground, but she was at home in your camp ground when we first got there. I guess dogs can sense things we can't.
Anyway, wanted to thank Mr. Pickral for keeping everything so nice."
Thank You,

This was our first time staying at Anvil Campground. We had a wonderful experience and would love to come back again. The young lady working the front desk in the office was very knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful. We camped here in a Motorhome.

Yes, it is older, but to me the condition is more important and the condition of this park is being constantly updated. Maintenance was always checking things, bringing things up to snuff (during my stay peeling paint was redone in a bathroom stall). The sites were pretty level, hookups worked fine and sites are wide enough for slides and awnings. And yes, CSX trains come through regularly right next door, but so what. It's quiet otherwise. And best of all, they have a bus to all the area sightseeing. For a buck and a half all day pass, you can go all over the area. I camped here three days in a Motorhome We camped here in a Motorhome.

I agree with the other reviews. It's a nice, older park but it's well maintained. The noise didn't bother us but it might some people. We've been to worse. :) My only complaint is that it is heavily wooded. I couldn't find any satellites with my Direct TV antenna from any spot. I would not stay here again because of that problem. On the plus side, it is a Passport America park. We camped here in a Motorhome.

Sites are very small, but everyone was very nice - campers and staff. We were there for sightseeing and entertainment so did not spend a whole lot of time at the campground. We would stay there again. We camped here in a Tent Trailer.

This is a very small yet clean park with all of the amenities you'd need. Recently updated electrical power boxes, water, sewer, and cable. Pool small but clean. Sites adequate but not large. Several playgrounds, nice landscaping, clean. On the Williamsburg Area Transit line, which is why we camped here (no car, just a Motorhome). This is a place to stay if you are seeing attractions. It is not a place to get away from it all. There is traffic noise and trains. We knew this going in and it didn't bother us. We would stay here again. Very close to attractions. The only thing we didn't like: the buses do NOT run on Sunday, which surprised me, as this is a Tourist Town. But that had nothing to do with Anvil. The staff were friendly and accommodating. We camped here in a Motorhome.

"Nice friendly campsite: stayed at campsite November 21st to nov 25th, 2007 and pulled a 37' fifth wheel. Our site was very easy to pull into. We also rented a cottage-journeyman and it was exceptionally clean and accommodating. It was larger than we expected and included full size appliances. Campground is a smaller campground with a cozy atmosphere. Personnel at office were friendly and helpful. Campsite is very close to major attractions and many restaurants. Camp store was well stocked. Train does run alongside campsite but was not annoying and past through quickly. Did not hear train at night. Even though we pulled in thanksgiving day, we had no problems checking in or getting settled. We definitely would stay here again. Read other reviews but stayed anyway and were glad we did. Will definitely stay here again."

I enjoyed my 4 nights at Anvil. Maybe if you're looking to BBQ and sit around, there are better choices. But my trip included biking, and being on the bus stop was GREAT because bus has a bike rack. Also, Waller Mill Park is across the street and it has a fenced dog park ~1 mi from Anvil (bring your dog's rabies certificate). My site was small-ish but very level. Nice showers; cute park; plenty of washers & dryers. The trains are loud but quickly pass; since I used my A/C I hardly noticed them. Staff was great.

"Love Those Trains!: This campground is extremely clean, convenient to all the tourist sites and the trains are an added plus for the rail fan. In addition the city shuttle will take you to any of the sites you want to see. Free WI-FI, no litter, a beautiful spotless pool and clean restrooms too. Additionally, there wasn't a mosquito in sight but we had a campfire anyway. As seasoned campers we've seen campgrounds that are terrible. This isn't one of them. Certainly there are trains passing directly beside the campground but they're fast and gone quickly -- unfortunately they pass too quickly to get a decent picture. We'd definitely stay there again."

This campground is small but has all the amenities you will need. Free Internet in the office, free coffee, bus line stop to anywhere in Williamsburg, groceries, and more. Very friendly service. I thoroughly enjoyed myself at this campground.

"Don't obsess about the trains: We booked a site here for Memorial Day weekend 2007, with serious misgivings because of all the bad marks given here. We took the chance because of the location. I'm happy to say our stay at Anvil was very pleasant. We got in late, around 11:00 p.m., and although the office was closed, our site number was clearly posted on a whiteboard by the door.
Daylight revealed a bright, pleasant campground. The tent sites had plenty of grass. The restrooms and pool were in pretty good shape. The staff we dealt with were sociable and pleasant.
We chose this campground so we could bike to Colonial Williamsburg. My 11-year-old daughter can't do much distance yet, but this was easily within her capability, and the road Anvil is on linked up with low-speed streets to get us into town...
Yes, there are trains, and they are pretty frequent -- more than twice a day. But the three of us slept through them at night, and during the day, they passed quickly.
Anvil Campground is excellent for what it is, a close-in campground near a major tourist attraction. If you want a real outdoor experience, or if you have trouble falling asleep after a train goes by, you don't want to stay here. But if you want to see Colonial Williamsburg, and especially if you want to be able to bike in quickly, it's a fine place. We will likely stay there the next time we go to Williamsburg."

"A very Nice Place To Camp: The campground is a very nice, clean place with good sized spaces. There is a pool and shower facility that is always kept up. There is a nice family lounge with TV and some interesting historical objects from Colonial Williamsburg. The wireless Internet is also a big plus. I will say yes there are trains but at one point in this country’s history the train was the backbone of our nation. They only come once in a while and do not cause that much of a disturbance. Also the owners Chris and Ray are more than happy to do whatever is needed to make your stay memorable. This campground has been in Williamsburg for many years and Passed down through the generations in the same family. I highly recommend it if you are going to be in the area."

We chose this park because it was rated highly in the 2005 Trailer Life guide, and we are glad we did. The smoking is not a problem in the office as we had read in previous posts here. It is now a "non-smoking" office which appeared to be very neat and clean. The staff was extremely helpful and courteous. Pool and bath houses were clean. With the train on one side and a road on the other, this campground can be noisy at times. Sites are well maintained but are slightly narrow. Good tree shading. We enjoyed our visit and will probably camp here again. We camped here in a Travel Trailer.

Extremely clean campground. The staff really takes an interest in the place. Close to the attractions. The modem hookup in the office is a plus. Would come back again if in the area. We camped here in a camper.

I disagree with the statement of the other comment. The roads were mostly paved or well kept gravel. The people in the office were some of the most helpful people I have ever met. Bathroom facilities were very clean. The train did run by the campground but it wasn't that bad. I was told the dumpster was located at the exit in order to keep the smell away from the sites. I just dropped my trash off on the way out and have seen the same thing at other parks. I would come back to this camp again. We camped here in a camper.
